Al Rapaport began meditation practice through yoga in 1970, and met his first Zen teacher, Kozan Kimura Roshi, in 1975. After Kozen Roshi returned to Japan he moved to ZCLA where he practiced with Taizan Maezumi Roshi and his various successors. Later he moved to Salt Lake, UT to practice with Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi at Kanzeon Sangha and received Asst. Teacher status (Hoshi). He finished studies with Jules Shuzen Harris Sensei and received Shiho from him in 2008. During this time Al founded the Buddhism in America Conferences which took place in Boston, New York, San Diego and Estes Park, CO. He currently is Founder/Director of Open Mind Zen Center in Melbourne, FL with affiliate groups in Naples, FL and Tulsa, OK.
